Interview with Fire Bug
By: Morley Seaver
Fire Bug is an LA band that has a
really interesting sound. They have just released their latest
EP End Of The World and if this is any
indication,
their next full-length record should be a real barnburner. The
three cuts on the EP are all very strong with a real cool,
retro vibe that wears well on repeated listenings.
The band is led by vocalist/guitarist Juliette Tworsey and
lead guitarist Jules Shapiro - who write all the songs.
Juliette's laid-back vocals are a focal point and Jules' guitar
lines accent the songs admirably. NowOnTour spoke to
Juliette recently to find out a little more about
the band.
NowOnTour: You have a slightly '70s sound. Do you
feel that is accurate and if so, where does that come from?
Fan of that era or just coincidence?
Fire Bug: Yea, it's not on purpose but
that makes sense, being that we love a lot of bands/artists
from that era.
How long has the band been around and how did
you get together?
We met in Chicago in the late 90's, Jules and I began writing
songs together for a year or so and then we held auditions
for a bassist and drummer. In 2000, the band decided it was
time to venture out to LA, where we have been ever since.
Can we go through the cuts on the record and have
you give us a couple of lines about what each one is about
or something memorable that might have happened during
recording?
End of the World
It doesn't pay to stay bitter.
Paradise
Work as hard as you and HOPEFULLY you get what you want!
Plus the Gregorian chant 'like' outro sounds even better with
headphones!
Forever Won't Wait
It's about my long shared relationship with
p-r-o-c-r-a-s-t-i-n-a-t-i-o-n.
Jules and you have very expressive guitars. Is
there a certain sound or state of mind you're trying to
achieve when writing songs?
In the writing stage not really because it mainly ends up with
bits and pieces that we picked our sub-conscious
meanderings...later on we work together and fine tune the
sound which goes in the direction of the mood that's already
there. Boy that sounds confusing even to us!
[laughs]
What can you tell us about the other members of
Fire Bug?
Ty Dennis is an incredible drummer and we are very
fortunate to have him with us in Fire Bug. He has a rich
musical background, plus his dad is also a drummer as well.
Ian Solomon is the latest addition to the Fire Bug line-up. He
is a remarkable bassist, and really has added so much to the
Fire Bug sound, especially the live show!
I haven't heard the previous two Fire Bug records,
do they sound much different than the band does at present?
Our style has evolved. We have definitely grown a lot since
Fragile and Footsteps To The Sun
and our production quality has improved quite a bit, too.
It sounds like the core of the band has been you
and Jules. What is it about your working relationship that
makes it endure?
We just connect and drive each other nuts!
[laughs]
Have you done many shows outside of
LA?
We have done some, but looking forward to a lot more.
What is a Fire Bug show like? Do you guys move
around a lot or just stand and deliver?
That is something you need to check out, when are you
going to come out to a show? Come and see us! Let us know
after the show.
What is your musical history? When did you start
playing guitars and joining/forming bands?
Well...Jules has a music degree in composition and I have
studied voice for a long time and have played guitar since I
was a little kid.
What would be your ideal blueprint for your career?
How would you like to proceed?
Well, we would like people to hear our music and tour and
play for as many people as we can.
Anything else you would like to tell us about your
band?
BUG ROCK IS THE SHIZZLE! Tell your friends. Hey we just
made that up. No seriously we want to say thanks so much
Morley for the interview! We hope to see you all out there at
our live shows! Don't forget you can always see what we are
up to and listen to our music at our Web site and
our MySpace fansite.
[Morley Seaver and NowOnTour thank Juliette and Fire
Bug for taking the time to answer our questions.]
