Interview with Roses Are Red
By: Caz* Bevan
I recently had the chance to
interview Rochester, NY's Roses Are Red (the band's second sit-down with NowOnTour). Lead
vocalist Vincent Minervino talks to us about being one of
AP magazine's most anticipated album's of
2006, the Take Action! Tour and suicide
prevention, as well as participating in a tribute album to the
Smashing Pumpkins.
NowOnTour: How does it feel to have one of the
most anticipated albums of 2006 as according to
AP?
Vincent Minervino: It is such an honor. AP
[magazine] has always been super supportive of us. I've
always looked at those lists every year and thought how
sweet it would be to be a part of it. Now we are. It's very
surreal.
Are you excited?
Very excited. I think the new record will be worth the
anticipation.
How was recording with Brian McTernan (Circa
Survive, Thrice)?
It was such an awesome time. He is one of the sweetest
dudes ever and his studio is so amazing. He is a super
easygoing dude, but is always on point and constantly
blowing our minds with his ideas and abilities. It's everything
a band could ever want while recording an album.
What made you chose him as a
producer?
I have been a fan of his work since I was a teenager. I
remember listening to records like Thrice's The
Illusion Of Safety, Cave In's Jupiter,
New End Original's Thriller, The Movielife's
Forty Hour Train Back To Penn and just being
in awe of the bands and the production. Even some of his
recent work, like Circa Survive's Juturna and
Moments In Grace's Moonlight Survived struck
the same chords with me. We are overwhelmingly honored
to be working with him.
In your opinion, what makes your upcoming album
one of the most anticipated albums?
We have really done a lot of soul searching with the writing
of this record. The lyrics are more personal, more mature.
The songs are more dynamic. We tried every idea. This
record is going to surprise a lot of people.
What made you want to be part of the Take Action
tour?
We have never had the chance to be a part of a tour that is
for a good cause. The Take Action! Tour raises awareness
for suicide prevention, which is an issue that has struck close
to home for some of the members of our band. We're also
very excited to tour alongside Matchbook Romance and The
Early November, both bands we are all big fans
of.
Do you have any personal battles with suicide or
have known someone who has?
I've never known anyone who has gone through with it, but
I've definitely had friends who have been in very dark
places and have contemplated it. It's definitely a very scary
thing to encounter.
You also did a tribute to the Smashing Pumpkins.
Are you a fan?
They are one of my favorite bands ever. When Ross at
Reignition [Recordings] called us and asked us to do a song
for the comp, we were super excited.
Are they one of your influences?
Definitely a huge influence on me personally.
They were one of the first bands I ever loved, and one of
the bands that made me pick up a guitar when I was
younger. To this day, I listen to Mellon Collie And The
Infinite Sadness very, very often.
What motivated you to do this tribute, and what
made you choose "Cherub Rock"?
"Cherub Rock" is one of the greatest songs of all time, and it
started out one of the greatest albums of all time, from one
of the greatest bands of all time. It was our first choice, and
luckily no one else had taken it. We are really happy with
the way it came out.
