Interview with Chris Colohan of Cursed
By: Derik Hendrickson
This is an exclusive interview with Chris Colohan, singer of Cursed.
Normally, I ask the band to introduce themselves. In the case of Cursed, why don't we start with something a little deeper how about this: Explain what Cursed is, for some of us that have only just learned of your existence.
We are, out of necessity, a bunch of old friends doing what we know as to put off or avoid altogether the grim spectre of adult life, for as long as we can. We intended when we started, to really think this out more than any other projects we ever had, so as to do more, go more places, make more records, put our whole lives into it and try to do it full time, or 'for real', however you'd put it (which really only boils down to money and meeting all your needs, rents, bills etc.). We made a full-on LP, "One", which is out now on both formats on Deathwish Inc. DWI are old, reliable friends who work their asses off so it was/is good to work with them. (The LP is available for anyone to hear in streaming audio on their site).
And your instruments of choice?
Christian McMaster has chosen the electric guitar and some goddamn loud, PA blowing vintage amps. Tom Piraino uses a bass guitar. Mike Maxymuik abuses some John Bonham-ass Ludwig drums and breaks lots of sticks. And I just mostly throw shit.
Did any of the band members come from other bands?
Never. We just picked this shit up, thought we'd give it a try and bam, it worked out okay so we made a band.
No, that was my joke. Really, we've all played in hardcore bands, together and apart- since we were kids. Well, teenagers, anyhow. Christian and I played in Left For Dead together, and Mike drummed toward the end. We all played in the Swarm together as well. Christian also plays in Haymaker, who really will kill you. Our first bass player Radwan sang in the Black Hand and had sung in Ire. Our friend Tom picked up on bass when Radwan moved home to Lebanon last year. He had played in a band called Left Behind. I also sang in Ruination, CTO, CCR, SOD and every other band ever. Mike has drummed in numerous bands, like Acrid. None, really as totally ass-kicking as this one though. I think that goes for all of us actually. This is the most fun we've ever had making music good on purpose.
What do you guys listen to in the van while you're on the road?
It depends who's driving. If I'm driving it's a general rule to bust my balls about whatever I play, like the Stooges (which rules) or something that every one of us would have anyway, like Witchery or something. Its funny, we bust a lot of balls. Sometimes its a nice break after 20 hours of thrash when someone just puts on the Police or Mike puts on Mr.Lif or something totally not related. Unanimously, though? Entombed (mostly "To Ride Straight
" or "Uprising"), Iron Monkey. Tragedy. The Cult. And all the old standards. Driving Music.
Tell me about the goat boy.
Oh my God. It's the "HeGoat". He is a man-goat and not a boy at all. He has been with us from the start. He is not of this world.
What can one expect to see when Cursed comes to town for a live performance?
They will see us play. They will see us mosh their ass if they even get that close. They will see their next birthday if they are lucky.
What should we expect from Cursed in the future?
More LPs. A bigger Hegoat banner. A video we're going to be working on, for "1974" with our friends Adam Brodie and Dave Derewlany, in which the Truth (provided by US) will mosh a church and its entire congregation to death. A lot of touring this summer and thereafter. The quitting of jobs. And hopefully another recording by the fall. For what? We don't know yet, but there's a lot coming out of us right now so we're just letting it.
Anything else you want to add?
Yes, thank you. I would like to add a light dusting of anthrax and the SARS to all mail addressed to the White House, the Pentagon, and some other key officials in high places. Do you think you could help me hook that up? Maybe this isn't the best place to talk about that.
Thanks.
No, thank you. Our website has all info, MP3s, show dates and contact info on it, and the you can order the LP, merch or hear the whole record on the DWI site. Thanks again.
