Interview with Kudzu Wish
By: Patrick Steven Patterson

I just moved from Chapel Hill, NC, about 6 months ago, after living there for about 5 years. Kudzu Wish, Disband and Brazilia (and maybe the X-Treem Badasses) are by far the best indie bands I saw in NC during my time there. It's always nice to be asked to do interviews, and it's even nicer to be able to ask a few questions of the bands you like.

Interestingly enough, it seems our email was answered not only by band members Adam Thorn (vocals), Tim Lafollette (bass, b. vocals) and Eric Mann (Guitar, b. vocals), but also by Mike and Anthony. But, we don't know who the hell they are. Possibly disguising themselves with false identities and cryptic answers to avoid The Man, here is a little email Q&A with Kudzu Wish.

Although I've seen you guys play a bunch of times, I really know little of your history. Is Kudzu Wish most of the guys' first band?
No, of course not. Do you think that this is the first time that we've ever played with other musicians and it just happened to fall together this well? We were once in another band all together, now called Mother Love Box. Imagine you are spooning your girlfriend's Candlebox/Mother Love Bone cover band.

When did you decide to drop the "The" from "The Kudzu Wish"? And why?
(Wrinkles brow) We feel like "The" is implicit in Kudzu Wish and we decided, "Why continue to have something that's continually messed up on flyers for the sake of mere rhetoric."

How did Ernest Jennings Records come across you guys? Or was it the other way around - you guys just camped on their doorstep until they either had to feed you or call the cops? I know Disband has a record out with them as well. Did you two bands take some sort of death oath that you would both sign with the same label?
Yes. Ernest Jenning was a man we sacrificed. (Mike laughs)
Eric: You know this song Adam.
Tim: What is this?
Adam: It's Buddy Holly.
Anthony: Motherbox Recordings.

So I watched your making of the record video...did I see a shot of someone wearing an Iron Chef shirt? Does it take a devout Iron Chef fan to rock as hard as Kudzu Wish?
We refuse to answer this question. In the future please have some regard for our ethics and legal situation. This question is not only ass-kissing, but incoherent.

The Central NC area has been an indie hotbed for quite a few years. I know that the venues there are generally supportive and the College Radio there is great compared to other places that I've lived. Is that it, or what might be the reason that the Winston-Salem to Greensboro to Chapel Hill scene is so supportive of the Indie Rock?
Ummm...that is a pretty huge question. Greensboro is a fun place to be in a band. There are a lot of really great bands, great people, cheap rent, good bars that are fun to go to even if you don't drink, good restaurants, two excellent college radio stations (WQFS and WUAG), and on and on. CODA.

I can't speak for any other towns in North Carolina, but I think the people in Greensboro who are supportive of the music in their town are people who like live music and having a good time. In other words, they are supportive because they like being supportive. I'm sure that they will stop being supportive if and when it stops being fun. D.S. AL CODA.

We pride ourselves on having a readership that is actively searching out new and interesting bands. Beside Kudzu Wish, who are some other NC bands that the NowOnTour readers should be looking out for? And along those lines, what are you listening to?
Why would we want to separate ourselves, why not just blend on in?

With all of the blatant product-placement going on in the movies and on commercial TV...well, I was just thinking...maybe I should try to get some of that. Who is the chief lyricist for your band and do you think he could squeeze "NowOnTour.com" into a new song somewhere?
NowOnTour.com doesn't really roll off the tongue does it?

In general, when a lead singer is screaming, is he really angry at something or is he just trying to pick up chicks/dudes by fronting the 'bad-boy' role? And while I'm at it, why does Kudzu's singer belt into 2 mics at once sometimes? Is that cool or just stereophonic?
You probably just saw that one picture. Whereas I don't consider myself an angry person, I do get angry and am considered an angry person. Anthony's mad at you. just kidding. *nudge.

What exactly is a 'face-rocker'? I saw that on your website somewhere. Do you mean that Kudzu Wish is actually gonna rock my face?
Yeah doooooooooooooooooood!

I appreciate you taking time away from the Rock to chat. Any parting thoughts?
