Jim Lauderdale launched his song-writing career by penning a
few number one singles for country superstar George Strait. A
recent Grammy winner for his collaboration with bluegrass
marvel Ralph Stanley, Lauderdale's genuine approach and
unique lyrical taste are legendary in the realm of country folk
music, and he has continued to turn out hit after hit.
At the other end of the spectrum, there is this cool, eccentric
folk band, Donna the Buffalo, who has been hovering about the
bluegrass world - appearing at the Spirit of Suwannee Festival
and at Merle Fest. So here's a theory that you may disregard
completely. What happens when you take a Grammy award
wining mythical songwriter, and fuse it with a talented
Americana folk band? The result: a live, pumping and moving
album that makes you want to fall in love with its beautifully
conceived tunes.
Heart-whole, genuine melodies such as on the title track, "Wait
'Til Spring," capture the echoism of a disimpassioned genre,
Americana. Lauderdale and Donna the Buffalo also have the
fortitude to encounter folk music, twisting out a tune like
"Ginger Peach," a smooth, sultry song which blends the voices
of Lauderdale and Tara Nevins. While its enchanting style
echoes in your mind and magnetizes your heart - the
continuous shuffle of fiddle- and acoustic-leads brings together
the easygoing spirit of folk rock.
The one reason why music thrives is because it never lets you
down. People tend to carry music with them for the rest of their
lives. This album has a certain quality that makes you want to
love it. I've been looking for magic, but I never knew it would
show up as a prolific songwriter working together with a
self-invented folk band. |
