This morning I woke up in Nashville, TN, and heard on the
radio that Country's legendary singer, Johnny Cash, had
passed away due to complications from diabetes.
Now, there's a tear descending from my eye, crawling down
my cheek, and my editor calls requesting an album review,
but not any one, the recently released Wildwood
Flower, by June Carter Cash. Mrs. Cash passed away
on May 15th, due to problems from heart surgery. June
Carter Cash's album was released Sept. 9th, this Tuesday,
and I only wonder if Johnny felt an inner release knowing
that the album was on its way for the world to hear when he
died the following Friday.
Wildwood Flower was produced by June's son,
John Carter Cash, and features June Carter Cash on
Autoharp, Johnny Cash singing background vocals
and Laura Cash playing the Acoustic Guitar, making this
album another part of the Carter/Cash heritage. Let's not
forget Johnny's daughter Rosanne. Her extensive
linear notes illustrate the beauty of this Appalachian girl's life
by preserving it for all to enjoy. The album was recorded in
various places: the Carter Family Estate in Maces Springs,
VA; Cash Cabin Studio - just 25 minutes away from
Nashville's Music Row; and June and Johnny's bedroom in
Hendersonville, TN.
"Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone?" is a touching duet
featuring Johnny and June and their timeless harmonies,
asking a question that is now being answered by millions
across the world. "Kneeling Drunkard's Plea" contains an
intro from a classic moment in 1949 courtesy of Sony, when
radio's famous Carter sisters sang about the Blue Ridge and
Smoky Mountains of Virginia. The album also features
excerpts from June's history, and it's a track like, "Keep On
The Sunny Side" that shows the artist's humor and her
optimistic outlook on life.
Johnny and June were married for 35 years and shared
more memories of their triumphant careers with the world
than any other couple in Country music. She leaves behind a
legacy of seven brokenhearted children, sixteen
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. However, she
is now reunited with her soul mate, Johnny, and with all
hopes, is pleased by her husbands dedicated work on
Wildwood Flower from start to finish. |
