Longwave, releases The Strangest Things, their
first record with RCA. Longwave previously cut two EPs. The
four-piece band resides in their native New York State, but they
sound more like they emigrated from across the Atlantic
Ocean. The vocals have the American dialect, but some music
tracks take me back to the 1980s with the English bands that
had success crossing over to America like Duran Duran and
The Cure.
This band focuses lyrically and melodically with a solid pop-
rock sound rather than the punch of punk rock of The Strokes,
who they recently toured with, bringing back the rock/new
wave influences. Their songs on The Strangest
Things range from catchy melodies in "Pool Song" to
more serious vocals in "Meet Me at the Bottom." The most
radio friendly song on the album would have to be "Tidal Wave"
which encompasses both great vocals and songwriting. This is
their first single due out in April across the airwaves.
I would spend money to see them perform in small, intimate
venues, rather than larger venues so the audience could relate
with Longwave on a more personal level. From what I sense
from the CD, this band focuses on artistic endeavors rather
than show stopping antics of The Strokes or The Vines. As
they tour in 2003, they will also be appearing in music retail
stores to get their music out to as many people as possible. In
addition, the CD cost will be lower to the consumer to highly
promote this release. You'll have no excuse not to buy this CD!
Longwave was featured at the Reading Festival and the CMJ
Music Marathon in 2002. As their music has been reaching
critics, press reviews have given this band positive spin. It is
difficult to find a bad review of this band.
The Strangest Things is one I'd recommend
checking out for you or your friends. Overall, this band has a
tight sound from one song to the next setting them apart from
other pop bands of this time. If you need an escape from
teenage artists, check out Longwave. If this band comes
anywhere near you, get out and give this group a listen. |
