In With The Old is the latest release from the San
Diego by-way-of Kona, Hawaii, three-piece Pepper. Obviously
incubated in the warmth of other roots-based dub rock records,
Pepper has joined the ranks of "just another rootsy dub rock
band" and constructed an album of well produced songs that
firmly bind them to their genre.
In With the Old was recorded at 311's Hive
Studios. Each song was produced and mixed well by Ron Saint
Germain (311, Dredg, Living Colour, Bad Brains). This record
does fine in a very limiting genre. Taking the safe road and not
forcing any record store owner to struggle as to how to
categorize this record, this release does nothing to break out or
expand the genre.
The songs on this record remind me of the couple of guys you'll
find at the beach jamming away at their guitars. While enjoying
the sunshine and the surf and the friends and the beers, they
sound great. Providing the soundtrack to a nice day. But
removing the musicians from the surroundings and the magic is
lost.
While it is not necessary to break new ground with each artist
and every album, I feel it is fair to the listener to create
something worthwhile. This record is a collection of songs that
lack depth or originality and when lumped together
demonstrate just how boring a genre of music can get when
nobody works to progress the sound. |
