Shane Sellers saddles up a horse and rides in the derby
during the day but focuses on a different winner's circle at
night, the Country music stage. This cowboy's got it all: a
winning horse that's landed him a position in this year's
Kentucky Derby and a singing career that is taking off to
higher places. His new release, Mathew Mark Luke and
Earnhardt, swings from quick, knee-slappin' Country
to a tear jerkin' tug at your heart with slow-moving
melodies.
"Red Beans and Rice" begins with a quick drum beat
permitting Sellers to sing about how some things just go
together: cold beer on ice, a fiddle and a squeeze box, a hot
and steamy dance with an even hotter girl on a smoldering
Louisiana night. If you can keep up, I dare you to line dance
to this speedy-paced song. Then, just when Sellers makes
you sweat, he turns around and pulls a tear from your eye
with the beautifully written, "God's Favorite Angel." This song
captures the heart and mentality of a father who's lost his
little girl in a tragic accident and believes that she's now in
the hands of God. He feels that she may very well be "God's
Favorite Angel" but is still daddy's little girl.
The artist tips his hat to Hank Williams, Jr. and makes it
obvious that "Old Habits" aren't dying hard - now that Sellers
has brought them back to life. Maybe it's the tangy sound of
the Dobro or Sellers heart-wrenching voice; one of the two
will convince anyone that a woman can be a harder habit to
break than a vice like cigarettes or a stout drink.
The title track is about a man born in the "buckle of the bible
belt" relating a story of the late night when his brother was
car racing down the foothills of the Carolina mountains and
nearly met God at the finish line instead of Dale Earnhardt.
This song shows more than any other that Sellers is more
than a race-horse jockey, but also a Country singer with a
sense of humor.
When he's not saddling up for a big race, Sellers is singing in
Dixieland about races and life in general, as well as "Old
Habits." Sellers recently appeared on a HBO documentary
special titled Jockey, which features an interview with Shane
about his life as a jockey and the accident that nearly ended
his career. |
