When I played the new album, Another
Intervention, by Down To Earth Approach for the first
time, I winced at the whiney vocals. I thought the disc was a
bit too generic. I then decided to play it again. It exuded an
earnest sort of energy, but it still had not impressed me. There
was definitely something there, so I played it again and really
listened. Since that moment, I can't stop playing the damn
thing.
This small town, New York band has crafted an ear-resistible
collection of poppy-rock that has just enough burning guitar
riffs to keep it from slipping off into tepidness. Down To Earth
Approach cover the same kind of ground as Simple Plan, New
Found Glory and Jimmy Eat World. The songs are all well
defined with each have their own identity, while still remaining
close to the overall sound of the record. The vocals, courtesy
of Jonathan Lullo, are mixed well without losing any of the
guitar and drum elements of the band. Production chores were
handled by David Schiffman who did the recent The Juliana
Theory and Mars Volta records and upcoming Jimmy Eat World
release.
"Exhibit of the Year" kicks off the record and is an up-tempo
single-in-the-making. Guitars are a bit crunchier for "Triple
Play." "We're Sleeping" starts off with a fast-paced verse
before slamming into the catchy chorus. Hell, they could all be
singles.
The best tracks are "Another Intervention" and "Living Rooms."
The former is a bouncy mid-tempo track with an undeniable
chorus. The latter is a slower (compared to the others) cut
with a shimmering chorus that sticks in your head along with
the jangly guitar.
This is the debut record from Down To Earth Approach (band
members: Jonathon Lullo - vocals and guitar, Ryan McClurg -
guitar and vocals, John McCampbell - bass and vocals, Peter
Metzler - drums). When radio gets a hold of this, it certainly
won't be their last album. |
