This album from 100 Demons is a cement mixer of a disc,
spewing as much melody as volcanic lava. This band is as
subtle as a heart attack. The twin chainsaw guitar attack of
Jeremy Braddock and Rick Brayall are the locomotive from
which Pete Morcey delivers his harbringer of doom vocals.
Rich Rosa (drums) and Erik Barrett (bass) round out the
band.
100 Demons fits in well with the hardcore family of
Deathwish Inc., except there are surprisingly more melodic
elements. "Repeat Process" is a grinder that features a
great chorus that has you singing while you're moshing.
"Time Bomb" which kicks off the record has a moody,
hell-landscape intro for 30 seconds or so that signals the fury
that waits around the corner.
All the cuts are distinct, despite most of the verses sonically
veering into the same neighborhood. Lyrically, the subject
matter is full of rage and venom. "If I could, I would stop
your heart. Not a threat. Just a thought, I do enjoy," is
some of the lighter moments.
"His Father's Son" is a savage dismissal of an absentee
father. "Where were you when we needed you the most?
You disappeared. You coward. Hide your head in shame.
You did no wrong? You tried your best? WELL YOU LIE!!!"
Geez, wouldn't want to cross this guy. Rosa's double-bass
drum propels this song that flows well despite being
uncompromisingly heavy.
Guitarist Rick Brayall shines on several cuts. This guy can
shred. "Destiny Never Came" and "Something Terrible" both
feature some lightning solos.
This is a very good record from a band that will only get
better, and I'm betting they'll get there quickly. |
