If anyone thinks screamo and hardcore is being
over-saturated, I would suggest that they never go to southern
California where those kinds of bands are a dime a dozen.
Many of these bands have taken inspiration (and musical ideas)
from bands that have made a mark on the scene such as A
Static Lullaby, Avenged Sevenfold and Thrice. One such band is
Nevea Tears, a new signing to Eulogy Recordings. Don't be so
quick to pass them off as another carbon copy of the So Cal
screamo-hardcore scene.
On first listen, the band does seem a little contrived. All
changes with the start of the second track, "Helium Queen," as
it blazes with keyboards and then explodes into a breakdown
with the keyboards still intact. With the keyboards, they sound
like Underoath if they would have stayed in a more hardcore
direction after the Changing Of Times
album.
Halfway through the album, their best song, "Heavy Breathing,"
can be found. It features keyboards and melodic singing which
resembles that of A Static Lullaby. This may turn some people
off because of their similarity with so many other bands, but
the peculiar thing about Nevea Tears is that after awhile you
realize they do have their own sound. If you listen to the music
in depth, the influence from other bands in their scene is
obvious, but they do have a broader range of influences such
as new wave and pop-punk that they clearly draw
from.
Do I Have To Tell You Why I Love You is a
promising debut from Nevea Tears, which is very surprising
from a band coming from such a saturated hardcore scene.
They may not have done anything groundbreaking yet, but
give them a couple years of touring and another album and
they may just turn some heads. |
