This Philadelphia band has produced a really interesting EP.
It's only five cuts long, but the excellence almost radiates from
it. There is a mixture of styles here, but Interpol stands out as
a reference point.
Sonically this band is tip-top. However, initially I was put off by
the vocals that occasionally go off in areas where the melody
should be, getting sidetracked on the way. Somehow, though,
Wes (the singer) seems to find his way back to redeem
himself. The guitars shape but do not overshadow the songs -
nice production too.
Each cut takes you on a little journey. Nice change-ups
decorate each song with guitar tapestries woven just over the
melody lines. The first cut, "All of This and Learning," starts off
with a seductive guitar line. Again, the vocals seem to miss the
mark in spots, but strangely it works. There is a nice
change-up towards the end with chunky riffing.
"You're Talking to My Guy All Wrong" is a slower track that
sticks in your head, despite the off-key warbling. "Hard Times,
Black Lines" is full of attitude and energy and will probably be a
favorite to hear live. "Danger Boy" is a moody shuffle with
good vocals. Another of the band's great change-ups (can't
really qualify for a bridge as they last longer than normal)
really adds to the song.
The standout cut of the record is "Mirror," kicking off with
acoustic guitar and an impassioned vocal. Slowly the guitars
build and it steamrolls to the end.
Trauma is an excellent representation of this
band. This is a passionate record that really resonates with
musicality. For a young band, they seem to have found their
sound quickly. They are currently working on a full-length
record, scheduled for a late fall release. I for one am
anxiously awaiting it. |
