Hailing from the O.C., (Huntington Beach, CA to be exact)
four guys who make up Hellogoodbye grew up together first
as friends and schoolmates before deciding to collaborate as
band mates. About two years ago, the foursome decided to
take the leap into music stardom. The band consists of
vocals and guitar by Forrest Kline, keys by Jesse Kurvink,
bass by Marcus Cole and rounding out the list, Chris Profeta
on drums. Hellogoodbye is serious about reaching their goals
on making it as a unique band, which can be identified in the
lyrical writings and funky musical styling. However, they
also encompass child-like charm that can be found in their
band name. Kline has previously mentioned that
Hellogoodbye got its name from the television show, "Saved
By The Bell."
This self-titled EP is only five songs long, but it's the best
twenty minutes that can fill up the time it takes to drive to
work, or the time it takes to fill up your lunch break.
"Shimmy Shimmy Quarter Turn" starts off with "wilted
flowers that I gave, not as nice as your bouquet..." and then
continues to make comparisons throughout the song from
the guy's point of view about a girl who has caught his
attention. He must learn how to associate with her, but
knows he must go back to the start to make things work.
(As a girl, I can relate …where's my flowers?)
Kline's higher-pitched voice fits well with the melody of the
guitar and keyboard that make up the pop rock sound of
Hellogoodbye. "Bonnie Taylor Shakedown" incorporates
some lyrics from "My Bonnie" in a creative splice within the
lyrics. "Jesse Buy Nothing... Go To Prom Anyways" has the
'80s synthesizer sound with Kline talking over the music
rather than sweetly singing in harmony, found in the other
songs. This shows the diversity found within the band and
its potential. The last track, "Dear Jamie… Sincerely Me" is a
mellow ode to a girl. This track is more rock influenced, with
emotionally filled lyrics, than the fun, light-hearted sound
found in the first three tracks.
Overall, I recommend checking out this EP by Hellogoodbye
to fellow pop/synthesizer listeners. You will be keeping beat
with your feet and singing out loud in no time. If this band
decides to play at a venue near you, I would highly
recommend going, as it would be ten times better. |
