People Chasing People is not dangerous. Sick of the
hurricanes, they moved the band headquarters to
Washington DC from Tallahassee, Florida, only to find that
unlike hurricanes that come and go, politicians are in bloom
all year. This realization has apparently not registered with
the lads yet, for they sound much too happy.
People Chasing People have apparently been together as a
band for a few years, but The Dayglow Light Of
Sleep is their debut album. Strangely it was released
in late 2004, although all recording was done in 2002 or
2003. This is not the type of album I would figure could be
caught up in major label bidding wars, so I don't really
understand the delay. The music sounds somewhat dated. I
enjoyed it for the most part, but I don't think it will age
well.
The Dayglow Light Of Sleep opens with the
ultra catchy, "You are Loved," which features stop and go
guitars and a nice vocal melody. The lyrics, "This is your
anniversary!" in the chorus are a little obvious, but then
again, no one ever said emo was deep. For the most part
People Chasing People manages to avoid the standard emo
pitfalls, but every once in a while they allow themselves to
slip with a cliched emo guitar riff or cheesy sappy
lyric.
That said, I did enjoy the album. People Chasing People
sound like a combo of Jawbox, early Dismemberment Plan,
and maybe some softer version of Fugazi and HUM. The
album is good, with nice guitar lines, good song
arrangements, and sugary harmony vocals. Some of the
song arrangements are rather complex it seems, but the
melodic hooks make the music very listenable and in fact
enjoyable.
My main complaint about The Dayglow Light Of
Sleep is it doesn't have any edge. It's an easy album
to have playing in the background and not even notice that
13 tracks have slipped by. The songs are pretty good when
you take the time to listen to them, but there is no real edge
to draw the listener in. People Chasing People have taken
the safest route between A and B, which may be what they
were going for, but it is not something that makes me want
to get excited about a band. |
