In Passing is a new band from Pennsylvania via Florida/Atlanta: Wes Sumner (vocals/guitar), Brooks Potieger (guitar), James Copland (bass), and Troy Lano (drums). Several thousand copies of their self-released EP blew out from their merch stands at shows. It's easy to see why. All the songs on their debut full length record bristle with an energy and maturity that escapes many young bands.
Plaintive vocals and commanding guitar power all the songs, which are of the pop/rock category. There's none better on the record than the opener, "The Fever." The cautious beginning breaks clear for the driving gait of this winner with an excellent chorus and crunchy guitar sound. Similarly, "Southwest," the following cut, is almost as good. The rest of the record is good although perhaps a bit faceless as some of the cuts are indistinguishable from others.
Overall, this is a good solid record that gives bang for the buck. Since the band intends on staying on the road to flog this release, it'll be interesting to see how their live experience will translate to the next record. |
