MF Doom (aka Daniel Dumile) is a fascinating artist that has
released several bombshells in the last few years, most notably
Operation: Doomsday and
Madvillainy. MF Doom is the metal-faced rapper
known as the Metal-Fingered Villain. He is apparently obsessed
with comics, as proven by his mask, a Doc Doom-styled
adornment. His lyrics are riddled with comic-familiar
trappings.
His newest release has a food theme. Cuts include "Gumbo,"
"Kon Queso" and "Hoe Cakes." The record is a gumbo of
overlapping skips surrounding the songs. There's a plethora of
snippets from TV shows, cartoons and other. Strangely, four
skits grouped together under the banner of "The Special
Recipes" divide the record up.
Vocal-wise MF Doom sounds a bit like Nas with the same kind
of rhyme patterns. The beats are uncluttered, most hanging on
a two-bar limit with a rinse, repeat approach. Supporting
another MC would make them glaringly weak, but MF Doom is
such a capable wordsmith as well as flow professor, their
limitations don't stand out.
The best cuts here are "Potholderz," "Vomitspit" and "Hoe
Cakes." The latter features a punchy beatbox beat and some
hot verses.
Some guest spots of note are Angelika and 4Ize on
"Guinnesses," as well as Madvillainy partner
Madlib. Count Bass D serves up some beats and verses on
"Potholderz," and Mr. Fantastik is featured on "Rapp Snitch
Knuckles."
MF Doom deserves mad kudos for the effort behind the
construction of this project. It's not something you can
casually listen to. You have to put it on solo and soak in the
entire thing in one meal. It's ambitious and works on most
levels. There's enough content as well as entertainment value
to warrant repeated listenings. Plus, can you deny a guy in a
metal mask that successfully blends cartoons, food and hot
beats? |
