It's hard to believe a band like Pepper could pack a venue
with screaming fans. I'm not sure if it's intentional they
sound like Sublime, but they have a long way to go if they
plan on reaching the levels Sublime reached. The
Pepper Live DVD has a sound that wants to be
professional, but a lot of rough edges need to be worked out
first.
Pepper Live has some potential, but it's very
hard to watch and listen to a band where the singers could
not hit a note with a sledgehammer. Kaleo Wassman, the
lead guitar player, has more vocal potential than Bret
Bollinger, the bass player, but that's not saying much. They
should both concentrate on playing their guitars and forget
about singing. Unfortunately, one of the only times someone
hits a vocal pitch is when they bring a guest vocalist up on
stage. They are in desperate need of a lead singer and a
manager. They need discipline if they are serious about the
music business.
Maybe they are just having fun and life on the road in the
music business is one big party for them. If that's the case,
then more power to them. They may not even want to be a
really good band fans can aspire to. They need to learn
vocals and lyrics are more than attitude. It takes talent,
discipline and direction. Just because your band's message
may be anarchist and radical, you still have to deliver the
musical goods.
Their musical potential is lurking within a body of a
somewhat mismanaged, undisciplined, and seemingly
out-of-control band. Smoking pot and drinking beer on
stage while they film their DVD sends a message they don't
give a shit about who is critiquing or watching them. Does
someone need to tell Pepper their music might be around
long after they are? It's like grandma with a tattoo of a skull
and crossbones on her breast. Damn, we grow up and have
to explain why we made the decisions we did when we were
young and stupid.
They sound like a bad spring break weekend put to music.
If Pepper plans on competing with the big boys, they need to
tighten up and get serious about their music. They are
obviously a band that has more money than talent at this
point. I would guess in order for them to be where they are,
someone who cares about them has deep pockets. |
