Rue the day hardcore kids started listening to At The Gates and
Metallica! There's a crap load of bands out there wearing their
hardcore on their sleeves just as much as metal, and it's
getting a tad bit old. Granted, there are bands out there doing
the style like As I Lay Dying and Killswitch Engage, who are
putting their own unique stamp on the sound. But there are
other bands like Gunmetal Gray, who don't bring anything new
to the table other than rehashed Metallica riffs.
While Gunmetal Grey actually has a grasp on melody (for
evidence, listen to the chorus off "Dreaming"), good
songwriting skills and totally sweet guitar solos, I've heard this
style thousands of times over at the local high school battle of
the bands show. I do have to give them props for being more
metal than core though. They actually know their
roots.
Let us hope that someday when it comes to metal-core,
someone will come along and give every other band a run for
their money...and may that band not be Gunmetal Grey. |
