Although this album didn't blow me away, I did enjoy listening
to it. I had never heard of The Breakfast before and wasn't
sure what to expect. As the first track started, I was pleasantly
surprised to hear the "jam rock" that came out of the
speakers. In an industry that is overloaded with the same old
"hardcore" crap over and over, it is nice to hear someone
trying to do something different.
The recording itself is lacking in some areas. The vocals are
too quiet and could have made a big difference in the overall
performance had they been a little more powerful. The bass
lines seem to be a little too simple for what is happening with
the rest of the instruments in the songs. But the guitar, drums,
and keyboards truly shine on this album. The guitar solos are
technical and difficult but not overbearing, they make sense
with the feel of the song. The drums keep things interesting
without distracting from the melodies. The keyboards add that
extra flavor many groups need, but not too many
have.
As I continued listening, I got somewhat bored about halfway
through the album. The songs all started meshing together,
and it sounded like I was hearing the same things over and
over. I definitely enjoyed the music on the album, but I was a
little disappointed to find there wasn't much variety in what
they were playing. On the last few tracks it seemed like there
wasn't any steam left in the songwriting. It feels like they just
threw together what they could in the studio to make a
full-length album. I would have been happy to see this album
come out in the fall instead of spring so that the true abilities of
these great musicians could be shown.
Overall the album is enjoyable. If you enjoy 70's style improv
music, you will definitely enjoy Real Radio. |
