The Hentchmen have been around for a long time and released
many records none of which I've heard. I am not a fan so I
can't speak for their previous hard work, but their latest effort,
Form Follows Function, reeks of insipid
songwriting and diluted musicality. The Hentchmen's style is a
little Jerry Lewis-ish at times and even comes off a little surfy
in spots. There are a lot of simple old blues riffs and beats
scattered throughout the record but everything The Hentchmen
do, including old-school country/polka, is not-so-cleverly
disguised to fit into the tired lo-fi pop rock genre, and listening
to it makes me want to vomit. Overall, Form Follows
Function forgets to take its own advice and has no
coherent form whatever; functioning only temporarily as a
Frisbee and slightly longer as a coaster for your PBR.
I am trying to remain objective because it's kinda my job, but I
honestly can't understand what it is people dig about The
Hentchmen; they're mediocre musicians writing mediocre pop
rock at a time when there are about 7,000 bands doing the
same thing and about three bands doing the same thing but
doing it well. Unfortunately for The Hentchmen they are band
number 6,999. Think I can't possibly talk any more shit… think
again. Their album gets worse as it goes along, so why should
my review be any different?
"Anywhere" is probably the sloppiest crap I've ever heard, and
it stands out as the worst of the bad on this record. "Safe at
Home" borders on punk rock in parts transforming into some
sort of Indian (dots not feathers) spacey thing that gets real old
real fast. The bottom line here is that The Hentchmen have
been making bad music for a long time now, and they aren't
going to quit unless someone stops them.
You should buy this album if, and only if, you have a musical
death wish. |
