Combining punk with hardcore, Philadelphia's The Deadly have
released a record that is full of aggression with just a bit more
polish than the average hardcore fare.
The Deadly is vocalist Rich Lippold, bassist Steve Turtso,
drummer John Pushnik, and guitarists John Hodges and Matt
Hanemann. The band started in 2001, drawing members from
local bands like Turmoil, Conviction and Metroplex. They
released an EP later that year that drew comparisons to The
Jesus Lizard, The Nerve Agents, Converge and TSOL. Heady
stuff indeed.
This release contains 13 tracks with most hovering around the
two/two and a half minute mark. The songs all have a
dangerous and almost-out-of-control vibe to them. The guitar
barrage starts and doesn't let up for the entire set,
accompanied by pounding drums. Singer Rich Lippold sounds
as though someone is performing a colonoscopy with the
vocals coming from the bowels of the island of
torment.
Unfortunately, only two cuts really stand out from the rest. "We
Are The Technology" has a sinister intro with a stutter-step
guitar riff. The closer, "Ringfingers," begins with a snarly guitar
that builds slowly up through a crunchy verse. Lippold
threatens to upchuck his intestines on this one.
Powerful, edgy and non-conforming, The Deadly are a serious
band. A few more dynamics might have helped this album
achieve a replaying status. |
