Just close your eyes and listen to Skillet's Grammy
nominated album, Collide. Take away what
you've heard about their status as a Christian heavy metal
band and really listen to the lyrics and catchy hard rock
sound. Their blazing hot tracks "Forsaken" and "Savior,"
compared to the rise and fall of the ballads "A Little More"
and "Under My Skin," will transfigure any opinions of
whether or not a Christian band can rock harder than Korn
or a big haired band of the 80's ala Def
Leppard.
Skillet, a four-piece from Memphis, TN, consists of lead
vocalist John Cooper and his wife, guitarist/keyboardist
Korey Cooper, guitarist Ben Kasica and drummer Lori
Peters. Two girls in the line-up of a popular hard rock band
can be considered pretty diverse. But Skillet's "Panheads,"
yes like the term of Grateful Dead followers, don't seem to
mind.
Skillet's deep riffs and up-lifting lyrics make for a killer
combination on the title track. As a string section begins, a
riveting electric guitar solo follows, Cooper brings in moving
lyrics about having something deep inside that keeps one's
faith alive. Now what's appealing about this song is that even
though they are a Christian rock band and when they say
faith you know where they're going, Skillet has a way of
making those lyrics translate to the secular - even to the
most agnostic person.
"Savior" rips open with an intense, fast moving electric
guitar that's very heavy and worth head banging to. Not to
be confused with "Savior," referring probably to Christ, again
Skillet gives off the impression that a savior is there to
rescue someone when everything is going to crash and
break. The thought of someone scratching at the surface of
your skin, feeling fear exit then holding one another is the
image that Skillet matches to a moving hard-core melody in
"Under My Skin." |
