Draconian Order is an Italian Black Metal band that sounds like
early Cradle of Filth. This is owing to the classically bent
keyboards and the vocals that sound a bit like Dani Filth. There
are also lots of riffs per song, something like the Filthy ones as
well as a good sense of dynamics, going from quiet, mysterious
parts to kick the doors down counterparts.
The prerequisite mysterious opening, "Requiem for the Funeral
of God," by way of the creepy keyboards dictates there is
malevolence to follow. And it does. "I am Vengeance"
explodes with a fury of guitars and adrenaline-ridden drums.
The prophet-from-Hell vocals snarl with an appropriate
other-worldliness. There are several parts to this song, and
the band is at its fearsome best when it hits the mid-tempo
middle section.
My favourite is "Dance of November Shades," which finds the
band at its most melodic with epic verses and great lyrics. In
the same vein (hehe) is "Awakening of Tyrants," another slow
building song that would make a great soundtrack
piece.
One could say there is an element of sameness throughout the
record and they would be right. Although there are varied
passages throughout, sonically the record fails to deviate much
from their launching point. Another quibble is the echo-ridden
vocals which sound like the vocalist was relegated to a
dumpster for the session. The vocals could have been pushed
out front a lot more which would have created a bit more
urgency to the sound. But this is the debut recording of this
band, and they have performed admirably. Their stage show is
apparently spot-on and so it'll be interesting to hear them in a
record or two. |
