Death Before Dishonor's latest release, Friends Family Forever, might have been called We Don't Give a Fuck About You Unless You're With Us. This album is the ultimate ode to loyalty and respect. If there is such a genre as gangsta-core, Death Before Dishonor is the henchmen of the Boston chapter. Not because they rap gangsta style, or because their name is written in Old English, but because they are infatuated with the gangsta code, the ideal, the character, the respect for their boyz, e.g., their friends and family. So whatever you do don't disrespect Death Before Dishonor's crew. Personally I find this whole philosophy to be narrow and foolishly juvenile, but I didn't grow up on the mean streets of Beantown, so I can't really relate. Maybe out there you stick together or die, I don't really know.

Death Before Dishonor's sound is typical and unimpressive, I think the message is the more important element; this observation is evidenced in part by the artwork, lyrics, as well as the, not-so-subtle title. Lyrically, Death Before Dishonor also seem to spend a good amount of time - the whole album - talking about pain and suffering, misery, regret, and betrayal. For a bunch of bruisers from Boston they seem melancholy and ominous; even to the point of being pathetic - like when your old lady starts crying uncontrollably and you feel like slapping her back into shape (for the record I don't condone spousal abuse). Maybe Death Before Dishonor just need to do some yoga, realign their shakra's and lighten up a bit; maybe even go to a festival and laugh some. Overall, I just get the feeling they take themselves way to seriously. I would love to find out they are a bunch of smilin' sweethearts that just do it for the money, but something tells me that ain't happenin'.

Fans of Blood for Blood, Some Kind of Hate, Death Threat and the like will enjoy Death Before Dishonor's feel and the fact the word Death is in the name. You should buy this album if, and only if, you don't take dishonor, or anything else for that matter, lightly.
