After hearing Some Girls' last release, All My Friends Are Going Death, I couldn't have been more excited to hear a band that just tore through my eardrums. I had got my ass kicked thoroughly, thanks to the 20+ songs that clocked under a minute in most cases. The only question was how were they going to top it? How were they going to progress?
With their new EP, The DNA Will Have It's Say, the answer is hard to find. Some Girls have the same formula, fast and insane tempos with the gain turned up to 11 and songs only lasting as long as a thought. But it's hard to get into this EP when it only lasts for so long. Sure, the punk is brutal, but it's not enough to leave a lasting impression. The only moment in the six-minute EP that leaves an imprint in my head is Karen O. from the Yeah Yeah Yeah's appearance on "The DNA Will Have It's Say."
Hopefully their next full length will be more focused, especially for singer/lyricist Wes Eisold where his dark, but powerful lyrics can shine and sink in. The same goes for Some Girls' brutal punk/hardcore attack - if it had more time (meaning, more than 20 minutes), maybe it'd leave more of a lasting impression. |
