I don't like indie. I don't like music with lots of sounds and effects added after the band records their stuff. I am the kind of person who enjoys a band that can play their music with or without help from electronic sources. Unfortunately for me, The Stairs with their new album On Sleep Lab is mostly what I don't like. I have to admit though that The Stairs did produce an album that is smooth and has few flaws. This album is probably a gem for those who are into this type of music.
Enough about me though, this album does have some strengths. The first song, "Don't Abandon Your Band," starts off slow with lyrics that really do draw you in. The group does a great job with "Smoking Armada" as well, with an upbeat style and strong melodies that are pretty catchy. My favorite song on the album was "Escape Clause," which features a much more straightforward style of play, much more like the music I like to listen to.
With many strengths and few weaknesses (which include my own stylistic preferences), The Stairs really hits hard with On Sleep Lab. This is the type of band that is genre influencing, not genre influenced, so it's a shame this is the band's final album. |
