This is the debut full-length record from Chicago's Divide by
Zero. They play sort of a melodic punk style, sort of like Sum
41 (and the vocals are similar at times). They have a much
crunchier guitar sound however. All of the record's 11 tracks
bristle with an energy that keeps the pace up
throughout.
They jump right off the bat with "Grave," a song that just
gallops from the get-go. The follow-up, "The Year that
Trembled" is another hard-charger that has melody to burn.
"Bleeds and Bleeds" kicks off with some nice trebly bass and
the singer alternating between singing and screamo verses.
"Timber" is where the guys show they know more than one
speed. The song drops down in the middle for a nice
instrumental section before the vocals come wailing back
in.
"Hold On" is a slower cut that showcases the vocals perfectly.
The song is augmented by both the quieter, than the more
aggressive guitars throughout. "Kick Harder" is a moody cut
that works well with the despondent lyrics.
As good as the songs are, they could benefit from a bit of
sharpening of the pencil. Most of them could stand to be
chopped by 45 seconds to a minute... cuz they just drag on a
bit long. As well, while all of the songs are good, they all tend
to blend into the same corner of the room.
However, a number of things on the record stand out such as
the terrific vocals (and harmonies), the great bass sound, and
the band's obvious talent at writing catchy songs.
Recommended songs are "Grave," "Timber," "Bleeds and
Bleeds" and "Hold On."
Answer To No One is a good record, but this band
has the potential to deliver a great one. |
