I like weird. So it's always a treat to find something that fits that weird profile. I don't mean, "look at me, I'm weird" like Gwar. I mean people who are naturally, unequivocally "out there" - truly weird (nothing says weird like weird). So it was a nice surprise to find No-Fi Soul Rebellion. Their Web site carries this slogan about the logo: "Treading the fine line between invasive awkwardness and cathartic genius."

This is their fourth release and is... shall we say, succinct. There are just five cuts, clocking in at just over 14 minutes. They would probably tell us they're just cutting out the bloating you find on most commercial releases.

No-Fi Soul Rebellion is essentially a one-man band. It's Mark Heimer, an odd singer-songwriter who churns out funky pop that percolates with a Prince-like vibe, complete with screams and full-on guitar licks. A drummer provided the beats for the record, but live it's a whole other thing.

Shows feature Heimer wandering through the crowd, singing over the music courtesy of The Soul System. This device is a hollowed out bass guitar containing a minidisk player that pumps out the instrumental tracks. It's connected to a mic and the stringless bass is played (air bass) by Heimer's wife Andrea, while he is rolling around the floor.

Lambs To The Slaughter's quirky pop works well. The first song "Church" is like a Prince tribute, especially with the phat guitar break. "Beautiful and Hard" strolls along innocently until it gets to the rave-up chorus. "We are David, You are Goliath (?)" (which is mislabelled on the CD) is a bouncy little toe-tapper that has some manic scream breaks… nice! "Let's Go To America" (I think... can't tell from the mislabelling) is a lazy funk-arama. "The Acrobat" rounds off the set with its amusing lyrics: "The reason you are so uptight... is that you know I'm right."

If you're looking for some fun bouncy pop, look no further than here. If No-Fi Soul Rebellion is playing in your town, they definitely sound worth checking out.
