After a few years' hiatus from music writing, I would never have chosen to review an instrumental album right out of the gate. I have nothing against it, but it's just not a genre I'm very familiar with. I chose to write about Pelican's The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw, not knowing what I was getting myself into. Luckily, some of the most beautiful things happen by mistake.
It was, in fact, by mistake that Pelican became an "instrumental art metal outfit." Trevor De Brauw and Larent Lebec began writing music together with every intention of finding a singer. Along with Larry and Bryan Herweg, they played a show to see if people liked them without a singer. It stuck. Now they can't imagine the band with a vocalist.
The Chicago instrumental artists take their time (with some of the songs ten minutes long) weaving major chords and melodies into exciting, colorful experiences. The drums on "Last Day of Winter" are exceptional and don't compromise the guitar. Another favorite is "March to the Sea," but the best track on the album is the untitled track four. It is beautiful, so I couldn't resist giving it a name. Like falling in love with a stray dog whose eyes seem to beg for a name. I named track four "Beautiful Mistake" for the way I stumbled across Pelican in the first place. |
