Dear Embrace Today

I just want to say I'd like to apologize for the NowOnTour review of your first album on Deathwish, Soldiers. Ever since you guys released that album, you have toured with the likes of Bleeding Through, Haste The Day and Bury Your Dead, proving you're one of the best live bands in hardcore. You have showed your passion for all things straight edge but at the same time being good enough with your very straight ahead hardcore style to surpass any boundaries, becoming a favorite among straight edge and non-straight edge hardcore fans.

Your new album, We Are The Enemy, starts off very nicely with "Sing Me A Lullaby." You start out with your fast paced barnburners but then you do something that you haven't done before, showing a metal influence with a melodic side not unlike Comeback Kid. One thing I've noticed is that sometimes the drums are a bit sloppy, but that's ok. I know you guys are for real and the lyrical content on the album has surpassed anything you've done before. Steven Peacock, it seems you're a bringing a more positive, spiritual aspect to your lyrics. For example, "Delivered From Evil" ends with one of Embrace Today's most brutal breakdowns, and you're yelling with your patented yell "This cross, my pain/Your loss, my gain/Take me for I am yours." I'd just like to say it's refreshing to hear positive lyrics along with your other songs talking about spiritual doubt, living for a better tomorrow and a topic you just wouldn't be Embrace Today without, straight edge.

Embrace Today, it's also refreshing you are fleshing out more creative ideas with the acoustic guitar interlude and female vocals on "Diamonds Are Forever." It is songs like this that make me have hope there is more to hardcore musically in the future, hopefully with more bands taking the chances you guys are.

So, I would just like to say "good job" on an album that needed to be made for the scene to listen and digest, hopefully thinking about what you're actually trying to say before they hit the pit for ninja kicks and floor punches. Congrats.

Matthew Nanes
