The new pack of screamo bands is quickly and surely over saturating itself much like the hair metal scene of the 80s, except none of the bands are topping the charts or doing stadium tours. One of the new bands to come out of the screamo scene is Arizona's Scary Kid Scaring Kids. Before signing to Immortal, they gained a fair amount of hype from magazines such as Alternative Press and many music Web sites. Now with the release of The City Sleeps In Flames, does it even live up to the hype?
Well, it's almost like a four-year-old kid running on wet ground outside of a pool. They're excited to be doing what they're doing, but they're obviously not careful and end up falling straight on their ass. I mean that in the sense that obviously these guys are stoked to be playing their music and if anything, that does come out on the Brian McTernan produced album (which I will say, is one of the most solid producers lately), but I've heard this over and over again and it has a lot of useless qualities. The keyboardist doesn't really add anything except bloops, bleeps and fake strings, much like Underoath's The Changing Of Times when their keyboardist didn't have his sound refined well. Also, they have three guitarists, three guitarists! The only time I can ever see the need for three guitarists is when they're pulling off harmonized solos like on "The Only Medicine." I also think I've heard the vocals before and that was on an album called Full Collapse by a little band called Thursday.
Immortal Records have struck gold before with influential and popular bands like Far, Korn and Incubus. But if this is their way of reinventing themselves as a label with Scary Kid Scaring Kids, they looked for a band and now have a band that'll get boys wearing girl pants to throw their hard earned allowances at. |
