Mob Stereo seems to pride themselves in their bad CD
reviews, according to their Web site and MySpace profile.
They seem to celebrate the fact that they somehow have
spread themselves like a plague of annoyance throughout
the reviewer community.
I get it, I do. I get the unfiltered, sketchy recording and that
dirty rock, whore-pop New York style, but it still has to be
done well. There is an art to gaining popularity through a
certain degree of disgust. Mob Stereo, however, has not
mastered this - the "so bad, it's good" aspect that they may
or may not desire.
I wouldn't call their album a complete waste of time. It is, at
least somewhat enjoyable as a one time listen perhaps for
the good laugh at the looks of other's faces. It would actually
make good background music at a drunken party full of
ex-cons with sensitive sides and generic rockers with dirty
mouths and dirty hair. Sometimes I have such parties, so
the disc is at least worth keeping for that very
reason.
But even in a drunken stupor and despite their sensitivity,
Mob Stereo is not likely to find a warm place in anyone's
heart. They just aren't "favorite" material. You're likely to
find their albums in used CD stores and exchange huts for
nothing more than $2. At most I can see someone keeping
one or two MP3's on their computer for an eventual desire to
listen with the Sub Pop region of their noise-band collection,
but an entire album of what seems to be one never ending
song... or mess... well, it's a bit much. |
