This is one of those albums that is very hard to review. I'm torn between enjoying it and hating it, as you will see throughout this review. Although I didn't completely love this album, it's hard for me to give it a bad rating because it's Eric Clapton, one of the greatest musicians ever born.
Let me get my biggest beef with this album out of the way first. I went through the whole album just waiting for that amazing guitar rock song that has come to be expected from Eric Clapton. And when the album was finished, I still hadn't heard it. I guess that's what I get for having expectations. I just wanted to hear something that reminded me of his songs I grew up loving.
Mr. Clapton brings a completely different style to the table for this album. It's a lot jazzier than past albums. There is a lot more going on, and the overall sound is much smoother than his past efforts. Musically this album is great for anyone into smooth jazz, since it seems like that is the style he was going for.
Vocally the album is perfect. But what more would you expect? Eric has been around the block enough to be able to put out a perfect performance and know what it takes to make his music unique and enjoyable.
This is a great easy listening album. But I can think of many others I would buy and listen to before I ever purchased Back Home.
I have two recommendations for this album. First, for the Clapton enthusiast, buy it. Why not, you already own every other album he has ever been on. Second, for anyone else, don't buy this album. However, I would recommend going out to your local record and buying one of his older albums. |
