If you like your rock straight-ahead with no frills ala AC/DC , then perhaps you're already a Nashville Pussy fan. And if you're a newbie, and have been wondering what all the commotion is about, this might be a good place to start.
Nashville Pussy is led by the husband and wife team of Blaine Cartwright (vocals and guitar) and guitarist Ruyter Suys (a Canadian now living in the U.S.) and supplemented by Jeremy Thompson on drums and new bassist Karen Cuda.
This is the Georgian band's fourth release, and it is a good continuation from their previous work (their debut disc, Let Them Eat Pussy earned a Grammy nomination). The energy is at an all-time high and the songs serve to entertain. Cartwright could win an Alice Cooper sound-alike competition and his dry-throat vocals propel the material ahead like a Dixie flag.
The material is basic rock and roll based around a good hook and some enthusiastic backing vocals. Thompson's energetic drumming keeps the pace fresh, and the guitars are crisp and clean. Of course, a liberal dose of humor is poured on throughout the set. You can get an idea by some of the titles, "Good Night For a Heart Attack," "Hell Ain't What It Used To Be" and "Meaner Than My Mama." "Pussy Time" declares that "We got the pussy, you got the time."
There are also two covers, the Tina Turner (among many) classic "Nutbush City Limits" (covered because apparently it was the first song that AC/DC and Brian Johnson jammed on) and a pretty faithful version of "Snowblind" from Ace Frehley of Kiss' solo record.
If you're looking for a record to put on during your party and I mean, later on, when the beer is really flowing, this is a strong candidate. |
