Crackjaw's first widely distributed album, Giants From
The Stereo comes across as a radio-savvy mix
between Silverchair and The Refused - with more of a punk
twist, an occasional dash of metal and even a
ballad.
I was disappointed in the length of the album. Although there
are 10 songs, it's a quick 30-minute mix. It is an easy listen.
It doesn't seem like one continuous song. They definitely
throw in a mix of their various talents and sounds. Most of
the songs seem to be your basic radio pop/rock mostly due
to the vocals. Their songs, for a few brief moments, feature
some screaming.
The vocals are, at times, flat with little dynamic. It sounds to
me that if I would see Crackjaw live, the music would be
outstanding and the performance probably a lot of fun, but I
imagine their lead singer, Ian Thomas would either scream
the majority of the time or sing their songs differently from
the CD. He doesn't come across as a strong vocalist, despite
production - but, it works - something as generic as
pop/rock does not usually require any outstanding vocal
talent. I only mention it because I feel he could adjust his
vocals to be more fitting, and then sing with much more
strength and impact - adding to the bold, energetic sound
they seem to want to create.
All in all, for a first widely distributed album and knowing
Crackjaw is one of the most recognized bands in the Detroit
area - I believe they have great potential for future
recordings. |
