With Honor is definitely not re-inventing the wheel on this one with their second full-length record, This Is Our Revenge. I am not necessarily saying that's a bad thing though. If you are a fan of this band's earlier release then you'll absolutely love it, hands down. If you are not familiar with them, then read on and I'll try to explain.
This Is Our Revenge is the band's strongest and most positive record yet, bringing back old school hardcore to the forefront, especially since their recent signing to Victory Records. The major differences between This Is Our Revenge and their previous album is singer Todd Mackey's vocal style is more accessible and not as rough around the edges this time around. Dare I say, a little more catchy even? Well, it's true. Another difference would be that there are not 'gang vocals' every other word like their last album. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit about every other word. But still, it was a lot. Don't be expecting that from this release.
After listening to this record all the way through I can really tell they put their whole hearts into this album. This is made most apparent on songs like "20 Strong," which chronicles an unforgettable summer spent with friends and tour mates Comeback Kid and Bane with lines like, "…twenty kids in three vans won't ever be the same again… Six weeks in the clouds and I'm still not ready, not ready to come down." And then there is the anthem like ending track, "In a Bottle," which I think demonstrates the best how much this band has grown musically. Don't expect every song to be 'chug chug.'
To wrap this up, This Is Our Revenge is one of the best hardcore albums in recent years and won't disappoint any fan of the genre. Powerful and inspirational, With Honor will have even the most faint hearted of emo kids wanting to throw a punch or two. |
