Latterman is a politically inspired band from Long Island; or,
they are entirely uninspired by what they see in today's
politically-charged world and therefore have derived an
album "dedicated to anyone who recognizes and struggles
against patriarchy, homophobia, racism, alienating wage
labor and any other of our worlds' many flaws." Inspired
they are, by the downtrodden Americans who remain
hopeful, and in turn, inspirational they are to their
fans.
The lyrics and overall message are motivating, but the
scrappy-punk rock vocals and basic punk rock,
snare-obsessive drums are dated. Can't we recognize a
political
band as anything other than "punk rock." Why not just call
them alternative? Why are there no Christian, hardcore,
political bands? Or, are there any? I would find it relieving
personally. Generation after generation seems to insist on
unifying and calling it punk rock. Why not just call it - unity?
Here we go. Let's spawn a new term and call this Unity Rock
and nothing more or less. It doesn't have to be good. It can
be catchy or it can be crappy. The genre is fairly wide-open
in sound and narrow in purpose, but we don't have to
categorize it as something that post-maturity most kids think
is old school, talentless drone.
However, I am not categorizing Latterman as talentless. I
like what they are about. I appreciate their CD. I simply
challenge them to do more about being heard. This does not
mean "sell out" but to simply, sell more. |
