Will Sartain's album The Listening Booth
sounded very familiar to me. Then I realized he too is from
Salt Lake City. I've probably seen him perform once or
twice, but he also sounds like a small group of immensely
talented indie-rockers here in Utah who often perform
together.
The Listening Booth is Sartain's second
full-length release, runner-up to his debut album,
Beep! At 20 years old, Will seems to be
planning both US and European tours. He also has his fingers
among several other projects such as The Tremula and The
Buttery Muffins.
Will's CD is a piano-rock, pop, indie bundle of depressive
joy. Yes, depressive joy - the all to familiar recognition of
reality, and how the best of times lead to the worst of times,
time and time again.
The Listening Booth is the perfect title.
Listening to his musical stylings I can just picture him
producing a music video with an old-timey piano crammed
into a recording booth and the "Now Recording" light
flickering overhead. Perhaps it would feature dancing
acrobatic clowns? Yes, that would be a good idea I think,
happy clowns with painted tears.
The Listening Booth features nine surreal tracks at a total of
35 minutes - not too short, not too long as the vocals are the
primary instrument and don't explore a vast range - every
song sounds very similar but it is still a story all his own. And
worth listening to. |
