Scarlet Sins is an all-female metal band from Toronto that
plays a nasty, hard rock. The band brings both melody as
well as some dirt to five solid songs on their debut EP. The
band is made up of vocalist Sylvia, guitarist Cris, drummer
Karli and Yvonne on bass, with the last three all contributing
vocals as well.
Reborn kicks off with the title track thumping
its way out of the speakers in an Alice in Chains-type groove
(minus the drone). This gives way to a compelling vocal
verse before the heaviness kicks back in on the chorus. Nice
guitar on the verses with this one. The cut goes back and
forth towards the end between a couple of different
passages, all nicely arranged. Tasty little bass runs
accompany the guitar patterns.
"Drown" is a bit faster and a tad lighter than the first cut and
has a great chorus. "Backstabber" is riff-heavy with the band
cranking it out over a hypnotizing pattern. Probably the best
cut is "Above Ground" which combines the heaviness of
"Backstabber" with the more melodic "Drown." All the way
through, the vocals of Sylvia fit the material like sweat on
skin and here she really leads the way with a strong
delivery. The final cut, "Alive" ends things up on a high note
- another riff-y song that has you cranking your head as
soon as it starts.
Over all, this is a very good debut. Nothing fancy. Nothing
exciting. Just good, well-played hard rock/metal that wears
well even after a few listenings. A bit more diversity on a
full-length will help them stand out a bit more and that
shouldn't be a problem with the obvious talent here. |
