This is by far the most engaging dance record I've heard in
years. The Green Children, coming to you by way of
Norway, Britain and California, are Milla (vocals) and Murell
(guitar and synths). The duo have written seven tracks of
pure dance material that sends a message straight to your
hips, and further south --- MOVE!!!
Their self-titled debut record kicks off with "Can You Move
Me." Milla's pure voice soars over this bouncy tune that has
'hit' written all over it. "Lost You" is by far, the standout
track. The verses are great, leading into the entrancing
chorus with a quicksand bass line. You will be throwing this
on repeat when you get to this track - just a little warning.
The meandering synth line of "Dragons" percolates just
behind Milla as she reaches for bird-like notes. "Miracles"
has a nice, layered vocal coupled with great instrumentation
from Murell's tasty bits on both keyboards and guitar. There
are some engaging vocals amid the electro backdrop in "I
See You." "Waves" has a memorable chorus that lets Milla's
voice shine. "How Can I Compete" contains a sassy verse
structure and boppy rhythms.
This is one of the few dance/club records that sounds as
good just for a casual listen as it does when you're out and
about or hosting a party. Despite, as with most dance
records, not having a warm vibe, the music is well played
and holds your attention throughout. Murell uses the synth
sparingly, plugging them in just the right places, nicely
showcasing Milla - whose voice pulls you closer to the
speaker. She goes high but stays out of the grating range
and when she goes for the mid-range, it works very well.
This is an excellent debut and I can't wait to hear more.
Check out their Web site for an interesting story
behind the band name. |
