If you're a fan of Lacuna Coil or Leaves' Eyes, then you'll
just love this excellent four-track EP from Italy's Reel Fiction.
Ex-Death keyboardist, Marcello Shirru put this outfit together
back in 1995 and has juggled the lineup since - just keeping
drummer Giuseppe. In 2003 they acquired lead singer Mary,
bassist Daniel and guitarist Gianni (no last names,
folks).
They have a sound that is between Lacuna Coil and Stream
Of Passion. The vocals are strong and there is a big melodic
bent to the songs - each having a distinctive identity.
The first cut, "Get On," starts with a commanding gallop,
powered by Mary's soaring vocals. An awesome chorus on
this one. The keyboards nicely complement the songs
without throttling the guitars. The next cut "Hysterical" starts
off shaky, as the verse is off-putting, despite a scathing
guitar on the intro. By the time it gets to the chorus,
however, things are better as once again the chorus saves
the day.
"Take the World Away From Me" is a hard-charging rocker
that morphs into a tour-de-force, thanks to the massive
hook. Man, can this girl sing; her voice oozes confidence
through the entire thing. This is a fantastic song. "Undone"
closes the record out on a high note with yet another wicked
chorus.
This is an excellent preview of a band approaching massive -
once the public at-large hears it. Within the parameters of
the successes of bands like Nightwish, Within Temptation and
that other Italian band, Lacuna Coil, Reel Fiction can go
shoulder to shoulder with any of them. The talent here pours
out and the songs are all top-shelf. I'm looking for the full
length already. Let's go guys - give us so more! |
