Perfect Addiction is the third album from Desert
City Soundtrack, and my first introduction to this indie,
alt-country outfit from Portland, OR.
Upon first listen, I didn't like it. I thought it was boring, the lead
singer's voice got on my nerves and the songs were
wish-washy. It was probably my third listen that I really paid
attention to the album. I looked past all the superficial crap and
noticed this band is truly talented.
Perfect Addiction turns on a dime - from heavy
floor pounding drums and guitars to sad, melancholy, light
piano melodies, but it's all done seamlessly and within the
context of the lyrics. The mix of piano, drums and guitars is
amazing. No better instruments could be used to provide the
feeling of such heartbreak and despair. You do feel like a
witness to the band's personal hell as they work on their own
personal demons through song.
Mark Carrillo's voice may not be the best and sometimes the
listener is left wondering if being the lead vocalist in a band is
his right profession, but it is unmistakable that he is able to
display such raw emotion - something that is missing from
most of today's performers.
In fact, the term 'raw emotion' is the perfect way to describe
this album. Lots of albums showcase raw, heartfelt emotion and
breakdown, but Perfect Addiction surpasses them
all. Desert City Soundtrack is definitely not the same ol' indie,
alt-country band. |
