Mustard Plug has been filling dance floors since 1991, and they
show no signs of slowing down. People I know who saw them
on the recent Ska is Dead 3 tour report they were awesome
and had the audiences skanking like maniacs for the entire
show.
The band, riding the tide in what some call the third wave of
Ska, has released their greatest hits, which showcase their
entertaining style. Most Ska bands are built for the stage but
Mustard Plug has shown their records are pretty much fun to
listen to as well.
The band is made up of lead singer Dave Kirchgessner,
guitarist and lead singer Colin Clive, Nate Cohn on drums,
bassist Rick Johnson, Brandon Jenison on Trumpet and vocals
and Jim Hofer on trombone.
Some of the best songs like "Beer" (with their drunken soccer
crowd chants) and "Not Enough" are the ones with
non-traditional Ska elements like burning guitar (which kicks
off the aforementioned songs). "Someday, Right Now" gets
feet tapping with its high-octane delivery. A nice twitchy bass
line launches "Throw A Bomb" and anchors "Lolita," proving
the boys are no slouches in the musicianship category, not just
live presentation.
This is also an enhanced CD with two videos, "You" and
"Everything Girl." "You" demonstrates Mustard Plug's famous
stage presence and the way they can make a crowd go nuts.
On "Everything Girl," watch as the band transforms a regular
tennis court into one big dance floor, complete with
zombie/goth enthusiasts who dismember a doll, cheerleaders,
and skateboarders. The scene culminates with everybody
(sans band) jumping into a pool. Man, that's power! |
