I try not to have too many expectations when I listen to a band's new album. But with The Oranges Band, I failed miserably. I loved the song "Finns for Our Feet" off All Around so much that I was hoping these guys from Baltimore would keep up with the quirky pop on their newest album, The World And Everything In It. I was wrong.

The album still features the same quirky lyrics the band is known for, but they're not as emphasized. Maybe this album is their attempt at maturity. Or maybe they're burned out, I mean, you can only write so many silly songs before they become ridiculous, right? I'm sure most of the songs on The World And Everything In It are based on inside jokes or a severe lack of sleep, but however quirky and nonsensical the lyrics are the album is well executed. The songs are simple in the sense they keep the instrumentation clean - there isn't a lot of filler noise and I appreciate that.

The album as a whole has a dreamy, ethereal quality to it. I think it's the lead singer's voice. It sounds like he is singing through a megaphone - not that it's loud but that it has that echo, hollowness to it. The singing reminds me of church. You don't really want to be singing all those hymns but you know you have to so you do it as apathetic as possible.

This isn't a record that is going to change the world or do anything profound for society. It's a fun album you can listen to without feeling as if you're getting a lecture or having to hear someone complain about his or her love life. The songs are much more anecdotal, which is appreciative but the album is still lackluster.
