Anybody who can front a speed ukulele punk band, called Uke till You Puke, has got something interesting going on with them. Ana Lovelis has crafted a really engaging record here that is jammed full of energetic songs that are chocked full of melody. The relentless aura of the record seems to be in character with the California singer-songwriter (by way of New York and Philly). She also has another group, Doxy, that won Playboy.com's "America's Best Unsigned Band" in 2004. She's working on a screenplay about her life and is working on a book of short stories and poems.
Ana has a voice you want to just keep listening to. From the first cut, "Nothin But Love," the energy level is topped up and you're pulled in. The next cut, "I'm A Girl," co-written with The Matrix (the people that worked on Avril Lavigne's first record), is the centerpiece of the set. This is an absolutely excellent song with its sexy lyrics, undeniable melody and made irresistible by Lovelis' sultry voice.
"Wet" competes for the top spot alongside "I'm A Girl." This song has another great melody line and once again the message is delivered by Lovelis… is it getting hot in here or is it just me? OK, moving on. "Kinda Girl You Love" hooks you in right from the get-go and will stick in your head for a while. "Come Down On Me" is one of those songs that would just score massively with its wide-range appeal.
"Satellite Sunday" (another Matrix co-written song) delivers the goods in a big way. "Bipolar Girl" has a bouncy chorus that should set toes in motion. "Polluted Heart"
has another awesome chorus that is really powerful. The last cut is "Mother of a Hit Song;" the cut that makes you smile with its off-color lyrics. It is followed by a radio edit of the same song.
Ana Lovelis is a real talent and this is an excellent record. There are virtually no bad cuts here, and there is enough melody and hooks to make it an extremely worthwhile purchase. |
