You have to give this band credit for their ability to fuse so many influences seamlessly. When so many bands are mimicking Depeche Mode, New Order, etc, the Australian trio that makes up Cut Copy are revolutionizing disco.
This isn't your Saturday Night Fever disco music. It's hip and fresh and utilizes many of the latest technologies. They have an amazing ability to make the stagnant, punch line music genre work. It's because the lyrics - most about unrequited love - are smart, and the album is well produced.
There are so many different things going on within each of the songs - so many different instruments and beats. I will admit it does sound a bit like house music after a while but that's only because of the repetition of both lyrics and music. You know how strobe lights make an epileptic go into seizures? I'm sure if music had the same reaction, Cut Copy's Bright Like Neon Love would make people drop left and right in an auditory epileptic fit.
The album isn't perfect. If you aren't into dance or electronica, you probably won't like it. The lyrics, although smart, are limiting. They're not revolutionary. They're not going to make anyone join a cause, breakdown in tears, fall in love or burn down a building. They will however make you dance, which is the sole purpose of the album.
Bright Like Neon Love is an album that was meant to be danced to. Now if you don't mind me, there is a pair of sequined booty shorts and matching roller skates with my name on them and I have the Cut Copy blaring. |
