An exotic beauty, with a voice the same, Janeska tries to persuade her listeners her freshman album has what it takes to be successful. Janeska has guts. Although an honest attempt, I was disappointed to find just as I started to really get into the album, the rest of it was remixes and edits. However, that was my only disappointment.
Having said that, I applaud the attempt. Musically mature, Janeska's album is presented as edgy-electronica dance music. Admittedly, it is not as upbeat and poppy as typical dance music; but its heavy beats will get you moving no matter where you are. This would be just as easy to listen to on the dance floor as in your car, or in bed.
Dance music or not, deep thought was given to the lyrics. Words are given to emotions many people have a hard time explaining. They paint pictures we can all identify with, "One pillow two heads, one bed two bodies." Not only that, Janeska shows off her language skills, using terms most of us don't know (and if we do we could never use them so fluidly). You won't notice them at first. The music swirls around you, Janeska's voice perfectly intertwined. Sensual rhythms pull you in, and you just get lost.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I saw the album cover. At times Janeska reminds me of a pumped up Portishead, like on the tracks "On Your Knees" and "Moonlight." The title track, "The Objective," definitely has one. The best songs on the album are "On Your Knees," "Butterfly Kisses," and "What The Heart Wants."
Overall, this album is more artistry of production, than of artist alone. But it works. Just give me more to listen to next time. |
