There are an amazing collection of songs on this
atmospheric soundtrack. The record is made up of all
Icelandic artists, ranging from the well known (Bjork and
Sigur Ros) to lesser known (at least by me) Slowblow and
Amina.
There are some fantastic performances here. The record is
book-ended by traditional songs performed by Steindor
Andersen and Sigur Ros, which set and end the mood nicely.
A live version of "All Is Full Of Love" by the remarkable
Bjork is presented as well. There are several versions of this
song in a live setting available, and this is one of the better
ones, especially compared to her Coachella performance.
Sigur Ros contributes a version of "#8," a slow-building
masterpiece, absolutely hypnotizing.
Johann Johannsson does "Odi Et Amos" which has some
interestingly doctored vocals, making it a very compelling
cut, as is Mum's song "Green Grass Of Tunnel." It's over to a
more rock format-ish "Find What You Get" by Bang Gang.
"Romantica" by Apparat Organ Quartet lends an oddly
pop-ish (in an Icelandic way) aura to the set, which is
welcomed.
Set against the lush sounds of Sigur Ros, "Motocrash" by The
Sugarcubes and "Bank" by Ghostigal are jarring, but
entertaining, nonetheless. The other cuts, including
"Oceania" from Bjork's 2005 release Medusa,
all round out the record nicely. Overall, this is a very
"un-soundtrack-like" set that is a joy to listen to. |
