Never head of Automag? If it's true that good things come to
those who wait, then that's the case here as it's taken ten
years for these boys.
Automag's debut album, Hellbound, released
on Texas-based Rockadrome Records, is packaged southern
fury. You don't have to be 18 or 21 to buy it, and there's no
seven-day wait or background check. It can easily be
obtained here.
It's hard for me to pick a favorite song on such a
power-packed album, but the first track, "Alone," might take
the prize. The very first thing you hear on this CD is "My
momma drank it straight from the bottle, yeah!"
Immediately following is a groove crunchier than a plate of
Grandma's deep fried fatback. It'll chip a tooth or
three.
"Bullet" is appropriately titled. Starting off like a slug fired
from the barrel of a shotgun, this song proclaims, "I am
judge, jury and hangman," while the next song, "The Last
Time," is a grimy drum and bass song. This much groove
should have some kind of government warning
label.
"Dead Man Walking," "Ready To Ride" and "Hardcharger" are
made of pure, recorded adrenaline. Prepare for eight
minutes and forty seconds of the ride of your life.
Remember to buckle-up and watch the speed limit while
listening to these. A helmet wouldn't hurt either.
"Whiskeytown" is fuckin' incredible! Written from a true
drinker's point-of-view with lyrics like "Bulletproof and ten
feet tall, gonna line 'em up and drink 'em all/Ain't never
gonna slow me down 'til they bury me in a Whiskeytown."
Shit, I couldn't put it any better myself.
The CD closes with title track - commencing with acoustic
guitar and lyrics that would make the late Waylon Jennings
proud. This song finishes the album like a beer chaser after
the last shot of whole-grain sour mash.
Though the CD is a tad under-produced, the tone adds to the
gritty, southern metal sound. Concept records ain't dead and
this is all the proof you need. Automag is about to put
Johnston County North Carolina on the map...for more than
just its moonshine. |
